Crisis in New Jersey’s Forests, 7 to 9 p.m., Duke Farms
The forests of New Jersey are mere ghosts of their former
selves. The natural balances of plants and animals that existed for
millennia have undergone dramatic changes in a very short period of
time, with some species increasing in abundance while others near
extinction. Native plants are disappearing while non-native, invasive
plants have become dominant. What are these changes, why have they
occurred, and how can we help to reduce their impacts? Join N.J. Audubon
Naturalist and Restoration Specialist Michael Pollock as we examine some
of the changes, both obvious and subtle, that have occurred in our
environment in recent years. Cost: $15 per person. Space is limited and
advance registration is required at

Energy and Environment Week
Pennsylvania has a long-standing tradition of
supporting green technologies.
Of the
16 billion US dollars allocated to renewables and energy
efficiency by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act some
450 million dollars will be spent on projects in the
Keystone State.
Pennsylvania hosts
the "Energy and Environment Week" (EEW), held on
April 12-16, 2010 in
Pittsburgh. EEW will bring together stakeholders
from North American and
Europe to talk business and new ventures. EEW means
five days of site tours, conference sessions, interactive workshops and
exhibits. The focus is on energy and materials recovery
from waste and biomass, the commercialization of hydrogen and fuel
cells, and the potential of energy efficiency technologies for climate
protection and cost cutting. One highlight of the event is the
alternative fuel vehicle ride
and drive. EEW co-locates with two established events, "Energy from
Biomass and Waste" and "Hydrogen Expo", both of which have become
leading industry gatherings. Organizer Freesen & Partner GmbH is a
specialist in connecting people in growth markets. More than 150
exhibitors and 2,000 delegates are expected to attend
EEW 2010. Exhibiting companies can contribute to the conference program
with a presentation on their technologies and projects. "This formula
has proven to be very effective
for our exhibitors", says Dr.
Ines
Freesen, Managing Director of Freesen & Partner. "It also adds
value for the attendees
who get the chance
to learn more about the technologies."

Hydrology of Wetlands
Rutgers University, NJAES, Continuing Professional Education – Waretown,
NJ How important is learning hydrology? Who
ever heard of a dry wetland! By understanding the hydrology, you
will understand the distribution and circulation of water in a wetland.
If you are planning to delineate, manage, or construct a wetland, you
will need to be able to identify and calculate the movement of water
through the wetland. This introductory one-day course combines
both classroom instruction as well as hands-on field visitation to
provide you with a basic understanding of how wetlands are created and
sustained. In the morning, you will review the connection between soil,
water, and vegetation which creates a wetland. After lunch, gain
practical experience using a soil auger to investigate hydrologic
evidence for wetland delineation, water table depth and evaluation, and
Hydrogeomorphic Models identification. For more information,

Fourth Passaic River Symposium
Montclair State University Conference Center, 1 Normal Ave.,
Montclair, NJ
Organized by
the
Passaic River Institute of
Montclair State University
It is
time to reconvene at the biennial Passaic River Symposium to discuss all
aspects of environmental issues relevant to the Passaic River Basin. We
will gauge progress made in addressing problems, learn about
new efforts, and discuss remaining challenges. The three previous
symposia (see archived materials at the web site) attracted nearly 300
participants each - this fourth symposium promises to be equally
attractive. The "Lower Passaic River Restoration Project" will be
prominently featured in the Symposium, including the "Phase 1" sediment
removal by the Diamond Alkali site and the "Focused Feasibility Study"
addressing the lower 8 miles. Projects and issues in the upper River and
tributary watersheds will also be examined.
REGISTRATION
On-line
registration and mail-in registration forms are now available through
the Symposium web site,
www.csam.montclair.edu/pri/conferences. Registration fees (includes
continental breakfast, lunch and book of abstracts): Professional:
Regular (by May 21) $95, Late $125; Student: Regular $40, Late $60. Pay
